FAQs - frequently asked questions

Our ski school office and ski hire is located at the bottom of the main Gondola station. The Ski School Maier is the red entrance on the right hand side of the cashier window. (The address is Liftweg 2, 5661 Rauris, Austria)

The meeting place for all intermediate and advanced skiers, adults and children and all snowboarders, is in front of our ski school office.

Our large beginners area, for both children and adults, is the area below the main gondola station on the right hand side as you walk down the hill.

No. You need to buy the lift tickets separately at the lift company (Rauriser Hochalmbahnen). Children up to the age of 6 do not need a ski pass if they ski with their parents or an instructor. (Lift passes are required for children born after a certain year. This is clearly shown on the lift pass leaflet.)
For our ski school kids, who ski for the first time, we offer a huge beginners area with a free magic carpet and a rope lift.
When the course moves on to the public lift, children from 6 years old will need a lift pass.

Tip: If the whole family is skiing and using the ski lifts, then it is worth buying a reduced family ski pass for the whole week!

All further information is available from the  Rauriser Hochalmbahnen.

No! If you are skiing for the first time you do not need a lift pass on the first day. All children and adults start our beginners courses in our private beginners' area, where you practice on the first day.
The instructor will then inform you when you need a lift pass and which one!
(There is also a special lift pass for the small lift on the nursery slope. Normally you can move across to the public lift on the second or third day.)

The whole day lessons are from 10.00 -12.00 and from 13.30 -15.30. Lunchtime is between 12.00 -13.30.
The meeting place in the morning is usually in front of our ski school office at 09.30. The children also finish there after the lessons. Please have a short chat each morning with the instructor to confirm.

The half day lessons are from 10.00-12.00. The lesson finishes on the mountain if the groups are already skiing on the mountain. The children cannot be brought down at 12.00 and need to be picked up at the middle station. (Talk to the instructor).

At what age can children join the group lessons?

Children can join the group lessons from the age of 4. We only offer full day lessons for beginners.
If you would like your child to start earlier, you can book a private instructor. Then your child has a one to one lesson.

For the snowboard group lessons we recommend an age of 8 years!
If your child would like to start younger, you can book a private instructor!

Yes, everything is organised so both children and adults can join ski school!
First we split up the children's groups and then we sort out the adult groups. Everyone is sorted into groups in the same area so you will know who your child's instructor is and where you can meet them for lunch.

Even if your children are beginners and you are intermediate, you can leave your children with their instructor at 09.30 so that you are on time for your own group lesson.
If the place you stop for lunch is different, we offer lunch supervision! Also your children will be never left alone. If for any reason you cannot make it for lunch, the instructor will take the child for lunch. The cost for "Mittagsbetreuung" (lunch supervision) is 15 Euros which includes food, drink and supervision.

Unfortunately, no lunch time supervision can be offered in the season 2023/24.

Of course just the children can join ski school! Our meeting place is just in front of our ski school office and you can bring the children there in the morning. The children can go with the instructor for lunch and the instructor brings the child back to the meeting place after the lesson. Your children will be looked after for the whole day.

Unfortunately, no lunch time supervision can be offered in the season 2022/23.

The program is built up over the whole week. At the end of the week there is also a great race and an awards ceremony.
Normally, you should join for the whole week; especially if you are a first timer or low intermediate skier. Of course you can also join for a few days and extend if you like the lessons.

Yes, especially if you are a first timer or low intermediate skier, you have to join ski school every day, because otherwise you miss important things!

We offer half day courses for intermediate and advanced skiers, who then join the full day lessons for just the morning session.

For children we recommend the full day courses only. Children who only join for morning lessons often don't keep up with the pace of the rest of the group and get left behind, so may then need to be put down a group.
For first time skiers and low intermediate skiers we only offer full day group lessons!

The snowboard group lessons are for just half a day (either 10.00 -12.00 or 13.00 -15.00).

On the first day we split up the groups on the nursery slope. We look at how you ski and take into account how many weeks experience you have. We try to consider age, language, friends, relationships and which instructor you like to ski with.

Of course sometimes not everything goes according to plan, so if you are unhappy for any reason, please come and talk to us so that we can find a solution.

We split up the children according to their skiing ability and age. We try to put friends and relatives together where possible. Please let us know when we split up the groups on the first day, so we can to put them together.

If the children are not at the same skiing level, the child who skis better needs to move down to the lower group.

The teaching methods of children and adults are completely different and therefore we teach them separately. Also, adults and children learn differently!

No, please speak to the instructor each morning to find out where they will be for lunch.

Yes, we do have lots of Dutch speaking instructors and all our instructors speak English!
We try to ensure that all children get an instructor who can speak their language.

In high season this can be difficult because there are lots of Dutch guests, but we do our best! Please let us know when we split up the groups which language your children speak.
